Employee Spotlight: Ryan Deto
Each month, we will put an employee in the spotlight to get to know them a little better. This month, we are featuring the latest addition to the Editorial Dept, Ryan Deto.
Ryan Deto joined the Trib Total Media Editorial team on January 24, 2022 as a reporter, covering Pittsburgh, politics, government, development and transit. Previously, he was Managing Editor at the Pittsburgh City Paper where he reported on features, edited stories and curated content.
“I was looking to get back to just reporting, and looking for a new opportunity in journalism, but didn't want to leave the Pittsburgh area, which I really enjoy,” Deto said. “So, when there was a reporter opening at the Trib, I jumped at the chance.”
Ryan’s favorite part about his job is getting scoops. “There is always a rush when breaking a story no one else has,” Deto said. “And then seeing if other publications follow your lead.”
Ryan says co-workers would be surprised to know that he has a stutter.
“It's been mostly under control since I was in middle school,” he said. “It doesn't show itself often, and like many stutterers, I have worked to disguise it, but sometimes (especially if I have to read out loud in front of people) it comes out.”
In his free time, Ryan enjoys spending time outdoors, hiking and playing sports, or just watching sports with his friends. He also likes to drink craft beer and travel. In fact, Ryan has visited 49 states, with only Alaska left to explore. In the future, he would like to learn to surf and eventually live in Paris later in life.
